Chapter 8: Kafei and Anju

“Kafei…” Anju spoke as she sat in her room. It was the same room she had brought Link to the first time, when he had been injured by the dog. “You promised me that you would come back…” she turned, staring at a beautiful dress. It looked like a wedding dress, but instead of white, it was a silver color. It was propped up on a mannequin, which had a silver mask upon its face. It looked almost like the moon, though nothing like the moon that was now threatening to crash upon all of Clocktown.

“Tomorrow is the carnival…and you promised me that on the day of the carnival we would trade the Masks of the Sun and Moon and become one…” Anju stood to her feet, examining the dress. “Oh Kafei…where are you?”

“Onee-chan!” a voice shouted and Anju turned around. The door to her room opened, and there was Link, still in Deku form. “Onee-chan, are you okay?”

Anju smiled and nodded. “Yeah, I’m okay…”

“Mom is saying we need to take refuge…”

Anju scoffed and rolled her eyes. “Again?”

“It’s almost guaranteed now, onee-chan…I’m sure that the moon will fall now…look at how close it is…”

“So? If it falls, then it falls…I’m waiting for Kafei…”

Link sighed. “Kafei…is he really that important to you?”

“Yes, he is…” Anju then turned around. “And didn’t Link tell you that you needed to wait here anyway? Something about Skullkid being at the top of the Clock Tower at midnight?”

Link nodded. “Yeah…he did say that…” his voice trailed off as he looked away. Anju sighed and picked Link up, holding him in her arms.

“Do you miss your real parents?” Anju asked.

Link blinked and stared up at her. “Sometimes…I mean…I never met them…”

“I know, you were left in the forest as a baby…” Anju looked up and out the window. Sadness appeared on her face.

“What’s wrong, onee-chan?”

“I miss him…Kafei…” Anju spoke, then closed her eyes.

Link looked down. “Kafei…please return to onee-chan so she will be happy,” he spoke, somewhat aloud. Anju just smiled a little as she stared at Link. She was happy that at least one person in her family cared. “It’s been three days now…that moon just might fall tonight…” Link looked back up at Anju. “I’ll bet you that Link is searching for Kafei, though…so I’m sure he’ll come back to you by tonight.”

“I hope so,” Anju spoke. “I really hope so…”

Meanwhile, in a land where only blue skies and white clouds seemed to exist, four giants now stood in a circle, surrounding a now human Link, along with his fairy partner, Tatl. “I’ve freed all of you,” Link spoke. “Now, will you help us?”

The Giants seemed to speak in their strange sounds, and Tatl listened. “Call you…” Tatl spoke, translating what the Giants said. “You said that before…how do we call you?” The Giants began to sing, and Tatl looked to Link. “That song, play the song.” Link nodded and played his ocarina along with the Giants. “‘Play this song, and we will come.’ That’s what they said.”

“Then we will do just that. We’ll call you from the top of the Clock Tower. You stop that moon, and we’ll take out Skullkid.”

The Giants made some noises. “They said ‘Forgive your friend.’ Who are we supposed to be forgiving?” The Giants made more noises. “What?! Skullkid?!” Tatl shouted and Link’s eyes went wide.

“You want us to forgive Skullkid for what he’s done? How? With all the evil he has caused…how can we forgive him?”

The Giants spoke once more. “They said ‘Dig deep in your heart, and you’ll find the power to forgive.’” Tatl sighed. “I don’t know if I can…”

“Show us what you look like, and we will forgive him,” Link spoke. The Giants reached their hands forward and parted the clouds before them. Their forms were now visible. They were all the same, four giants, each with a large head. Where the ears should have been were two long arms that stretched down to their knees, and two legs came from the bottoms of their heads. They each had long green beards and large, green eyes.

Link’s eyes went wide with astonishment. “Th-this is what they look like?” he asked, then looked down. “All right…forgive Skullkid…if such a creature as you can exist…then I can forgive him…” Link felt himself let go once more, and dropped back in Ikana. As he looked up, he noticed the dark clouds were gone, and that all of Ikana seemed peaceful again. Looking around, Link didn’t see a single undead anywhere. “We broke the curse on Ikana…”

“Yeah, and we freed all four giants,” Tatl spoke.

Link smiled. “Let’s get back to Clocktown and end this, then!”

“All right!”

Link and Tatl rushed forward, heading back to Clocktown. It took them a good hour or so to get back, and they could see it was about midday. “I wonder how Anju is doing…” Link spoke to himself.

“Exactly the same way she was at this time when you were a Deku…” Tatl spoke.

“Which means she’s sad…” Link looked down. “I’m going to find Kafei!” He then rushed forward.

“Wait! Link! We need to get to the Clock Tower!”

“He won’t be there until midnight…and we have to wait until I climb it as a Deku anyway! We’ve got some time to spare, so I’m going to find him.” Tatl sighed, but understood Link’s reasoning. They ran off together, searching every inch of Clocktown that they could. They asked everyone they could find, but no one had seen Kafei. Finally, after a few hours of searching, Link found himself back at the Stock Pot Inn. The sun was beginning to set, and he sighed.

Suddenly, Link noticed a boy standing by the door to the Stock Pot Inn. He wore a blue outfit that had white sleeves. At the ends of the sleeves were a blue fire symbol, almost like the red fire symbol on Anju’s skirt. Around the bottom of the outfit were white circles, and the boy had long, blue hair. On his face was a mask that was golden-brown in color. It had two long ears, along with a long snout of a face. “Hey, you!” Link shouted. “Who are you?”

The boy looked up quickly and turned to run. From the boy’s hand, a small red envelope fell to the ground. Link quickly ran over to it and picked it up, looking at it. “‘To Anju…’” Link began to read. “‘From’…” Link’s eyes went wide. “…‘Kafei’?!” he shouted. He quickly turned to open the door to the Stock Pot Inn, only to get smacked by the door.

“You remember what Link told you right?” a female voice asked.

“The clock tower. Skullkid is waiting for me,” a male voice spoke. Link slowly sat up, staring at the now open door in front of him. He heard the male voice give a heavy sigh. “Skullkid, I’m coming.” With that, the male voice ran forward, and Link’s eyes caught on who it was. It was Deku Link.

“There I go!” Link shouted. “I’m off to the clock tower!”

“Which means we don’t have much time left,” Tatl spoke.

“Huh?” the female voice asked and peeked around the door. It was Anju.

“Onee-chan!” Link shouted, now seeing Anju.

Anju blinked at first, but then smiled as she remembered who this was. “Hey, little brother,” she spoke. The two hugged for a moment.

“Evacuating?”

Anju nodded. “We have to…there’s no time left…”

“What about Kafei?”

“I didn’t find him…” Anju looked down.

Link looked down as well, then saw the envelope in his hand. “Oh! Onee-chan! Here! A boy dropped this.” He quickly handed the envelope to Anju.

Anju stared at it for a moment, then quickly opened it up when she saw who it was from. She pulled out a piece of paper and began to read it. Her eyes went wide, and she felt like her heart skipped a beat as she read the letter from Kafei. “I’m staying here!” she spoke the moment she finished reading it. “Thank you, little brother. I’ll stay here and wait for Kafei.”

“Wait…what did the letter say?” Link asked.

“It said he’d be back before the end of the night…” Anju spoke, smiling.

“Are you sure you can trust him to be back? I mean…he’s been gone for a month…and he had a kid deliver the letter…”

Anju nodded. “I believe in him, I know he’ll come.”

Link stared for a moment, then nodded. “All right, if you’re sure. I’ll go look for him, then, and bring him to you.”

Anju nodded. “Okay, I’ll be waiting here for both of you!”

Link quickly turned and rushed off. “What are you doing?” Tatl shouted.

“Looking for Kafei!” Link shouted back.

“But we’ve been at it for hours, what makes you think you’ll suddenly find him now?”

“That kid knew something…and I’m going to find out what…” Link continued to rush forward for a few minutes, until he finally managed to find the boy once more. He was running towards the laundry pool. Link quickly followed behind, and the boy rushed around, crossing a bridge over the pool, and into a nearby door. Link followed close behind, and grabbed hold of the door just before the boy shut it.

“Hey! Let me in for just a second! I want to talk to you!”

“Go away!” the boy shouted.

“What do you know about Kafei?” Link shouted as he managed to pull the door open now. The boy had been pulling on the door, attempting to close it.

“What do you care?”

“Please, I need to find him. I promised someone I would find him!”

“Who?”

“Anju…” Link spoke, and the boy seemed to stare at him.

“You promised Anju?” Link nodded. The boy reached up and pulled the mask off of his face, now revealing a somewhat feminine face, along with brown eyes. “I am Kafei.”

Link’s eyes went wide. “N-no way!” Tatl shouted, also shocked. “The Kafei we are looking for is an adult! You can’t be any older then Link!”

“I was turned into this by that little demon…” Kafei spoke, looking down.

“Skullkid…” Link spoke, and Kafei nodded.

“I was at the Milk Bar Latte with my guy friends…we were all celebrating my upcoming wedding…we celebrated until late in the night, and when I headed home…I found that little demon waiting for me outside…he asked if I would play with him…I was stubborn and told him off…He then cursed me into this form…”

“That’s terrible…” Tatl spoke.

“This is all just a game to him…” Kafei spoke, his fists shaking. “But what about me? How dare he mess with people’s happiness this way! I won’t forgive him for what he’s done!”

“But it’s not just you…” Link spoke, and Kafei seemed to stare in surprise. “He’s done all kinds of bad things…In fact, if you look outside, you’ll see that moon in the sky. He’s the one trying to bring it down.”

“Really?” Kafei asked, surprised.

Link nodded. “It’s because of the mask he’s wearing. It’s called Majora’s Mask, and its power can cause all kinds of trouble…I think Skullkid was corrupted by it…and maybe has even been taken over by it…He may not even know what he is doing…Tatl and I are going to stop him…”

“Then take me with you.”

“What?!” Link shouted in surprise. “I can’t do that! It’s too dangerous!”

“Please! I’ve been searching for him for a month! I need to find him and get him to change me back in time for tomorrow’s carnival!”

“And you think he’ll do it?” Link asked.

“He will if I force him to.” Kafei made a fist.

Link sighed. “Well, more importantly, you need to get to Anju. She is worrying about you.”

Kafei shook his head. “I can’t…not like this…I made a promise to Anju that I would be there…but I can’t see her in this form…”

“Why not?” Link asked.

Kafei reached behind him and grabbed a golden mask that looked to be shaped like the sun. “This is the Sun’s Mask. Anju should have the Moon’s Mask. Every year we hold the Carnival of Time in the harmonious season in which the sun and moon are in alignment. It’s said that, if a couple is joined together on this day, and they exchange the Sun’s and Moon’s Masks, that they will have good luck in their marriage…I made a promise that I’d come back to her with the Sun’s Mask.”

“I understand your feelings, Kafei…but Anju is really worried…why not go see her and give her some relief? Let her at least know you’re okay, and that you are trying to get Skullkid to change you back to normal?”

“You think I can do that?!” Kafei shouted. “I can’t see Anju, not until I’ve changed back!”

“You fool!” Tatl shouted and hit Kafei on the head. “Don’t you understand? When a girl is in distress, the only thing she cares about is seeing the person that they love, no matter what they look like! That’s a woman’s heart, and that’s what Anju would think!”

Kafei looked down and sighed. “Maybe…” Suddenly, the ground began to shake and Link bit his lip.

“That’s it, the moon is coming down. Skullkid and…” Link paused for a second, “…him are fighting right now…we have to hurry! Kafei, there’s no time to get to Anju now…so come with me…we’ll get you back to normal!”

Kafei nodded. The three quickly rushed out of the building, and started towards the clock tower. About halfway there, Tatl stopped. “Keep going, I’ll be there in a moment!” She then flew off.

“Where is she going?” Kafei shouted.

“I don’t know, but don’t worry about it!” Link shouted. He then looked up, and he could see the moon coming closer. They continued to run, and Link quickly pushed open the doors to the clock tower. It was at that moment that the moon struck the tower, and Link’s eyes went wide. “No! We’re too late!”

Suddenly, time seemed to freeze. Link felt a presence move by him, and he looked around. “What…just happened…”

“This will not happen,” a female voice spoke. Link noticed immediately that it was the voice from the first time. Suddenly, a beautiful, golden goddess appeared in front of him. Though her skin glowed a golden color, her hair and eyes were a violet color. She was dressed in a strapless dress which was also violet in color. She rose her hands, and Link felt time reversing. He felt himself get pulled out of the clock tower, and placed near it. Suddenly, time began again, and he looked around.

“Where is she going?” Kafei shouted, and Link turned to look at him.

“I…don’t know…” Link looked around again, then up. The tower was now longer crushed, but the moon was still falling. “This happened last time, too…” he whispered to himself.

“Link, are you okay?”

Link looked up at Kafei and nodded. “Yeah, let’s go.” He rushed forward and pushed open the doors to the clock tower once more. The moon still lingered in the sky, threatening to crash down, but this time it wasn’t coming down. Kafei and Link quickly rushed up the stairs, reaching the top of the clock tower. Link pushed open the door, just in time to watch a blue light vanish from view.

Skullkid was on the ground, lying on his back, staring up at the moon. “They got away!” he shouted, his voice sounding extremely deep. Link’s eyes went wide as he now realized what had happened. Deku Link had just reversed time, and headed back into the past, leaving him to finish the battle.

“Skullkid!” Kafei shouted. “I demand you change me back at once!”

Skullkid slowly stood to his feet, then turned around to look at Kafei. “And you would be…who?”

“Kafei! That night, one month ago, you turned me into this kid!”

Skullkid laughed. “Oh, yes, you, I remember now. That was funny!”

Link quickly pulled out his ocarina. “Keep him distracted,” Link whispered. He then began to play the song the Giants had taught him.

“I demand you turn me into an adult!” Kafei shouted.

Skullkid laughed again. “Seriously? You expect me to change you back?” he laughed. “This is your punishment for making fun of me…stay in that form forever!”

“I wasn’t making fun of you!” Kafei shouted. “Please, change me back, I’m begging you! I have someone I love, and I can’t see her like this!”

Skullkid laughed again. “Begging me? If you’re begging me…then fall to your knees and beg!” he shouted. He pointed a finger at Kafei, and the ground beneath him exploded upward, forcing Kafei to the ground. He laughed once again. “This is hilarious!”

“Skullkid,” Link spoke. “I won’t let this go the way you think it will!”

“And who do you think you’re talking to? I don’t see either of you with a Mask of Power! And now, watch! This moon will fall, and all of you! Your families, your friends, all of you will get what you truly deserve for all the things you did to me!”

“Where are those Giants?” Link whispered to himself. “They said they’d be here!” He pulled the ocarina up to his mouth again and played the song a second time, but it still seemed to have no effect.

“Anju…what can I do…?” Kafei asked as he slammed his fist into the ground. “There’s no time left…I should have gone to you…”

“Kafei!” a female voice shouted, and Kafei’s eyes went wide. He turned, and his eyes fell upon Anju, now standing there next to him.

“A-Anju?” Kafei asked.

“I’m right here,” Anju spoke, walking over to him and kneeling down. Kafei stood to his feet and stared at her. Skullkid, too, had taken notice, and the moon’s decent seemed to almost halt.

“Onee-chan, what are you doing here?” Link asked as he rushed to her.

“I came because of that fairy,” Anju spoke, pointing at Tatl. “Tatl, wasn’t it?”

Tatl giggled. “That’s my name. I was worried you forgot it.”

Anju shook her head. “I remember all of you.” She then looked at Kafei. “Including you.” She took Kafei’s hands and smiled.

“I’m sorry for worrying you, Anju,” Kafei spoke, looking down.

Anju lifted Kafei’s head up to look at her. “It’s okay. We’re together now. That’s all that matters.” She wrapped her arms around Kafei, and Kafei returned the hug.

Tatl smiled as she stared at them. “They’re lovers, yet they look like a mother and child.”

Skullkid growled. “Don’t do stuff like that in front of me!” he shouted.

Link turned to Skullkid. “Skullkid, stop this right now!” he shouted, but Skullkid turned away.

“Now I will definitely drop this moon!” Skullkid rose his hands once again and Link growled.

“This is it…there’s nothing left I can do…those Giants aren’t coming…they lied…I can’t stop that moon on my own…I don’t have the power…can this be the end? I’ve been fighting since I got here, and there’s nothing I can do to stop any of this? This can’t really be the end…” Link balled up his fists and his face showed great anger, yet great sadness.

“Damn it!” Link shouted at the top of his lungs. Suddenly, the earth began to shake and Skullkid began to look around.

There was a loud noise, and Skullkid’s eyes went wide. “It-it can’t be…” he spoke. “No!” he shouted, grabbing his head and screaming. “This can’t be!”

There was another loud noise, this time Link recognized it. “Is it…them?” Link looked around, and from all four directions, clouds seemed to appear. Two large hands reached out and threw the clouds away, showing the Four Giants. “It’s them!” Link shouted.

The Four Giants gave another roar as they walked forward. Their roar now changed as they began to sing the song which they had taught Link. Link quickly pulled out his ocarina and began to play the same song. The Giants moved forward, stopping a few steps away from Clocktown. They then reached their hands up, their hands colliding with the moon above them. They began to push hard, trying to stop the falling moon. Slowly, it began to slow down, and soon, it came to a full stop in their hands.
